Question: What made you guys want to become scientists?

Keywords: ,

  1. Thanks for the question.
I wanted to become a scientist because I like travelling, spending time in the bush looking for animals, and talking to others about things they have found out animals. It is just a lot of fun.

  2. Not sure, to be perfectly honest, as I was hooked on science (astronomy in particular) from a very early age. I suspect the original reason was similar to the reasons I stay a scientist. A sense of wonder at the Universe. Where did it all come from and what are the underlying laws that govern the structure and evolution of the Universe. It amazes me that there can be these things called humans who are composed of elements that were produced in stars, who can observe the Universe and write down scribbles of mathematics on bits of paper and in computers that accurately describe what we see around us. I’m simply astonished the Universe exists, that we exist to observe it, and I want to know how and why that came about. These are questions that science seeks to answer.

  3. Great question!
I never really new what a scientist was and certainly didn’t know what one did until I became one myself. Instead I just kept studying things that interested me. I went to Uni to study physics because I was interested in nuclear energy but as soon as I got there I found I was more interested in biology and bacteria so I kept studying that instead.

  4. Hi theblackguy, somemuttdogga24, lrak23, chedethierry, eleanor, corina, and shani!
For as long as I can remember, I have always liked to learn about the world around me and about how things worked. I really loved to read from an early age, and my parents studied science at university as well so there were always science books around me when I was growing up. I guess I got hooked on reading kids science books and encyclopaedias, and I used to love watching kids science shows on TV as well. I loved science lessons in primary school (in Grade 1 we spent a lot of time learning about earthworms!), and I found science interesting all the way through high school so I kept studying it. I particularly liked chemistry so I kept studying that at university, which is where I still am now!

  5. Interesting story for me. I kind of fell into it. Didn’t really know what I wanted to do after high school, spent a year studying PE Teaching of all things then transferred to Science. I’m glad I did. it’s been an amazing experience. Learning all the time. Travelling the world, meeting amazingly dedicated people. Being in Cancer Research, I feel that I really can make a difference to lives of people suffering from such terrible disease. Seeing the human face of the disease is a real motivator.
