Question: What makes hair curly?

  1. Hair is primarily made from a protein called keratin. Like all proteins keratin has a shape determined by the ways in which all its bits are connected to each other. One such connection is called a di-sulphide bond. These bonds are caused by two sulphide residues in a single keratin molecule becoming attached to each other. Doing this causes the hair to keratin and therefore the hair to bend dramatically.

    James has pretty much answered it, so the only thing i have to add is also the amount of moisture in the air can alter the curliness of the hair.

  3. Hey @ shaunt. James pretty much has it. All I can add is that disulfide bonds are formed between hair strands. Where and how many of these covalent bonds are formed determines amount of curl in hair. These can be broken and rearranged when having hair permed, etc…
