Question: What mammal has the most bones?

Keywords: , ,

  1. I would say the animal with the most bones would probably a snake with all those vertebrate but Dustin can correct me if I’m wrong. Humans have 206 bones and most mammals have between 200 and 400. I don’t remember where I heard it but I think its elephants.
    Over to you Dustin 🙂

  2. Hi pnemon,

I am not really sure. James could be right; elephants have about 350 bones or so.

Snakes are certainly the animal with the most bones.

One interesting thing about the bones though of mammals and reptiles is that the bones in the jaw of the reptile are the bones that now form the inner ear in mammals.

It is a very cool piece of co-opted evolution. Co-opted evolution is where structure being used for one thing, are used for something different in a descendant.

  3. Hi pnemo,
That is a really interesting question.
It could maybe be elephants or blue whales – apparently they both have around 350 bones.
Loxodonta africana (African elephant, or African bush elephant) is bigger than Elephas maximus (Asian elephant) but I would guess that they probably have similar numbers of bones in their skeletons, as their overall morphology/structure is pretty similar. There are actually a few other species of elephants, too.
