Question: how many different types of science is there?

Keywords: ,

  1. Traditionally there were maths, physics, biology and chemistry but that is so outdated its not useful any more. If you can think to study it then there is a name for it, trust me. There’s also a name for the science done by, for example, physicists interested in biology, called interdisciplinary research. The number is not infinite but it is very large!

  2. @shaunt. I agree with James. Many, many types of science with new classifications being revealed almost daily!

  3. Hi Shaunt,

I am going to go against the others here and suggest there is really only one type of SCIENCE.

Science is a tool. It is a process of understanding. Just like a hammer is a tool. The tool of science, in its simplest form, works by proposing an idea about the way something may work, gathering evidence to test this idea, and trying to prove this idea wrong. All scientists (these are people who use the tool of science), whether they be astronomers, biologists, geneticists, or chemists are using the same tool or process of inquiry.

Of course though, there are many different fields of inquiry that people focus upon. I find the best way to think about these in terms of scale. As James stated, while we traditionally put these fields under broad umbrellas like physics of biology, in truth many techniques are used across different fields. Understanding particles in motion is part of physics and chemistry, but is also something that oceanographers do.
