It is true. He in fact spent a great amount of time working on alchemy under the impression he could turn lead into gold. Certainly is, actually Newton spent more time writing about other things that writing about science.
As Dustin and James say, yes. In fact he was interested in a great many things: mathematics, alchemy, physics, astronomy, theology. A wide ranging thinker.
