Question: why do dogs have rabies?

Keywords: ,

  1. Hi Princess,

Many animals can get rabies (bats are a good example, so can people). Rabies is a viral infection that causes swelling in the brain. Once it reaches the central nervous system, it is often fatal.

  2. Nice answer, Dustin.
Princess, rabies can actually be transferred from other animals to humans, too! Scary!
I guess dogs are just the animals that we associate with rabies the most, even though several animals can be affected by it.

  3. That’s an interesting way of thinking about it. What about, why does rabies pick dogs? The virus behind rabies is unusually broad in terms of a target animal to infect which is weird because most viruses can only infect one animal and that’s it.
