Question: what can help me grow?

  1. Height seems to be one of those things determined by your genetics. If mum and dad are both short then you might not have any luck I’m afraid. There is some suggestion that exercise and sport can help growth and muscles and bones grow in response to small amounts of stress. If you play a lot of sport then that might help.

  2. Hi Kartinyeri11,
Depends on what you mean by grow.

If you want to grow muscle mass, physical activity and weight training can certainly grow muscle mass.

But if you want to grow in height, then there is not a lot that can be done, except for walking around on stilts.

  3. @kartinyeri11. As well as genetics, etc, You also need a good diet to give your body the best possible fuel for bone/muscle growth. I like Dustin’s stilts option though. I should try this…

  4. Hi Kartinyeri11,
We can’t do much about our height as that is determined by your genes.
But we can make our bones and muscles stronger (and a bit bigger, but we can’t make our bones longer) by eating well and exercising. Nutrition is definitely important as that is what provides our body with fuel.
I’ll just add that this for interest: while we can’t actually grow taller, you might have heard of some people getting surgery to become taller. This procedure is also used to correct actual skeletal deformities, but it sounds quite painful so I definitely wouldn’t recommend it just for getting taller! The doctors break the long bones in your lower legs and then attach a frame to your leg with screws that go into your leg and are attached to the bones. Everyday they adjust the frame about 1mm to lengthen the gap between the two broken ends of the bones, so that new bone tissue will grow and your muscles etc will also lengthen. After they have lengthened the gap as much as you/they want/can (I guess this would only work for a few cm of extra length), you have to keep wearing the frame for several months until the newly grown areas of the bones have completely solidified. Wow!
