Question: Is there Tornadoes in Canberra?

Keywords:

  1. Hi pnemono,

Not on a regular basis, but there are a couple of reports of them in the past. In fact earlier this year there was a report of a tornado at Bredbo, which is just south of Canberra.

The problem with them happening at Canberra is that Canberra is built in depression with mountains to the east and south, these mountains deflect air currents.

So it is possible, but not very likely given the shape of the terrain.

If you want to find one, i am pretty sure Questacon has an exhibit showing how tornados are formed.

  2. Canberra has the wrong terrain and is in the wrong place for lots of tornados, exactly what Dustin said.
