Question: what is the most unecessary organ in your body and why?

Keywords: , ,

  1. The appendix is pretty pointless and we can live without it. It may serve two functions as there are cells inside of it that secrete hormones and it is known to act as a little pocket for gut bacteria to sit in and repopulate the gut if it is cleaned out by diarrhoea.
It can become infected and inflamed leading to surgery to remove it and people who have it out suffer no consequences normally.

Yeah, I think James has this. The appendix, is probably the most unecessary.

  3. hey redranga. Yep, i reckon so too james. Organs that are pretty much useless for us or give us no benefit at all are referred to as vestigial organs. When we think of vestigial structures, our tailbone (or coccyx) is one of these.

  4. I agree with everyone else, the appendix.
By the way do any of you know if it is called the appendix because it is now “extra” for us? (like an appendix to a report contains additional information that isn’t absolutely needed to understand the report)

  1. I heard of a russian doctor who removed his own appendix in a operation of his own because he was in antarctica and had seriously bad appendicitis

    • It wouldn’t surprise me too much. I have heard of surgeons guiding people through operations because the surgeon needs it done and can’t fix themselves for whatever reasons. Dentists are apparently also well known for doing their own work.
