Question: what is glue made of?

  1. Hey @glitt3r. Depends on the glue. There is a real history when it comes to glue. Historically, many old glues were made from animal bits boiled down collagen from skins, bones, tendons, and other tissues, similar to gelatin. The word “collagen” itself derives from Greek (kolla), glue. These proteins form a molecular bond with the glued object.Today’s glue is mainly synthetic, and mass for mass supply. Also, a lot of glues are non-toxic so you kids don’t get sick if you eat it! My wife makes glue from flour and water for fun crafty stuff with my kids too.

  2. Hi glitt3r,

Glue traditionally only referred to adhesives made from animal flesh.

But if we are to look at adhesives more generally, they are made from various things and can be categorised as follows:
Animal based – collagen or casein (protein) based
    Plant based – natural resins
Solvent – this bonds two materials together by dissolving them a little and then they set, basically it welds things together
Synthetic monomer – these are things like super glue
Synthetic polymer – this includes adhesives that are two part glues where you have to mix two chemicals together which causes a reaction and it hardens, or hot glues where you heat the glue apply it, and then as it cools it sets.

  3. One of the simplest glue recipes is plain flour and water. With just these two things you can make a paste that will be pretty sticky.
Coincidently you can make something called a Yorkshire Pudding from flour and water as well (you eat them with a roast dinner). I managed to embarrass my mum at school (primary school) because we were making glue and I told the class and the teacher that at home we would cook this and eat it 🙂

  4. Nice answers, everyone. You’ve got the range of glues covered.
    Lol @James’s story! 🙂
Once when I was little I managed to super-glue my fingers together. It wasn’t for long enough to cause any damage, and I managed to get them apart again without any trouble. So, not really funny, but I thought I’d mention it, seeing as we are sharing glue stories.
